Stop Giving Tea to Children, Pediatrician Warns as It May Hinder Growth

Come winter, and a warm cup of tea is all you need to warm your soul. While it may have many benefits, tea only causes harmful effects in children, especially when they are under the age of 12 years. According to renowned Mumbai-based pediatrician Dr Nihar Desai, the beverage stops the growth in children. ,“If you make a child under 12 years drink tea, he or she will not grow. It affects the growth of children under 12 years of age,” Dr Desai said on Instagram. ,,Why is tea not good for growing kids? , Here are a few side effects tea has on children, according to Dr Desai ,,Curbs iron absorption , Tea is packed with tannins, which are compounds that hinder the absorption of iron from plant-based foods. For children who rely on plant-heavy diets or face iron deficiency, excess tea consumption might just trigger the issue. ,,Affects sleep , Tea affects sleep as it is packed with high caffeine content. Caffeine is a natural stimulant that works on the central nervous system to increase alertness and combat fatigue. While moderate consumption can enhance focus and athletic performance, excessive intake can lead to anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and other side effects. ,According to Dr Desai, caffeinated teas like black and green tea disrupt sleep, especially if consumed close to bedtime. ,,Oxalates stop growth , “Oxalates and tannins in tea stop the absorption of important nutrients from your intestine, which hinders growth in children,” said Dr Desai. High oxalate can lead to growth and development problems. Excessive oxalate – which can happen when the kids drink tea - builds up in the body and damages organs, including the bones, leading to growth issues and other severe health complications. ,,Lack of nutrition , Tea does not have any significant nutritional value for children. In the critical growth and development phase, kids mostly need to focus on nutrient-rich foods rather than indulging in a cup of tea. ,,Increases the risk of dehydration , The mild diuretic effects of tea due to high caffeine levels contribute to dehydration in children. Hydration is important, and kids are better off sipping water or other healthy drinks to quench their thirst. ,,Healthy beverages you should give your kids instead, ,Instead of giving tea to growing kids, make sure they drink beverages that are packed with nutrients that contribute to their overall health development. A few of these include: ,,Coconut water , Coconut water supports your child's growth by providing hydration, electrolytes, and essential nutrients; however, it should just be given in moderation and only after six months of age. For growing children, coconut water helps with hydration, digestion, and bone development. ,,Almond milk , Almond milk supports growth by providing calcium and Vitamin D for bone health. It is best used as a supplement to a balanced diet that includes other protein sources like soy milk or dairy milk. ,,Fruit and vegetable smoothies , Smoothies are among the best ways to include fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods in your child’s diet. They are also helpful for parents dealing with picky eaters. Many foods like spinach, cauliflower, pineapples, blueberries, peaches, almonds, and even bananas can be made into smoothies and given to children at least once a day.
