Steven Jacobs ready to serve Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport

Kaieteur Sports – Former national cricketer Steven Jacobs is ready to serve in his new role in public service, having been sworn in over the weekend by President Dr. Irfaan Ali as Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

The appointment, following President Ali’s re-election, represents a significant milestone in Jacobs’s journey, from national athlete to businessman, city official, and now a government minister.

At 37, Jacobs steps into a newly created post within the Ministry, where he will work alongside Charles Ramson Jr., who has returned as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport.

A prominent figure during the recent People’s Progressive Party/Civic campaign, Jacobs is expected to focus on initiatives that empower young people, promote culture, and foster national pride.

Speaking with Newsroom after the swearing-in ceremony, Jacobs expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.

“I will bring an athlete’s perspective to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and most importantly, a commitment to empowering young people,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs’s sporting career spans over a decade. A stylish batsman who later evolved into a reliable off-spinner, he represented Guyana’s senior cricket team from 2006 to 2017 and played in the Caribbean Premier League for both the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Jamaica Tallawahs.

Off the field, his credentials are equally noteworthy.

Jacobs is a Level II cricket coach, Vice President of the Malteenoes Sports Club, and Vice President of the India-Guyana Chamber of Commerce.

He also captained the West Indies Under-19 team and pursued studies in Sports Management at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. He is currently completing a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Policy.

Before this appointment, Jacobs served as a City Councilor, representing Constituency Two – Kitty and Subryanville, a role that reinforced his dedication to public service.

Jacobs was among 25 ministers sworn in at the State House on Saturday evening.

His appointment also recalls a notable precedent in Guyana’s history, where legendary West Indies and Guyana batsman Roy Fredericks served as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport from 1980 to 1985.
