Sterling Heights is doubling down on its role in Michigan’s defense corridor, unveiling a joint initiative with neighboring Warren to spur jobs, contracts and long-term growth in the sector, Senior Economic Development Advisor Luke Bonner said during an appearance on “Live in the D.” “Sterling Heights is uniquely positioned because of its manufacturing base,” Bonner said, noting the city’s proximity to the U.S. Army’s TACOM installation in Warren. “When you look at Macomb County as a whole, there’s been about $65 billion of defense contracts awarded to Macomb County companies,” he said, with many going to firms in Sterling Heights. In just the past few years, he added, the county has seen about 5,000 contracts totaling nearly $4 billion. The new Arsenal Alliance formalizes a partnership between Sterling Heights and Warren to market the region’s capabilities, recruit suppliers and support existing firms. “Both communities are really doubling down on the defense industry and its importance,” Bonner said. The alliance is hiring an economic development advisor focused specifically on defense to “market, promote, attract businesses and help grow the businesses that are already there.” One of the biggest opportunities, he said, is “telling the story about the defense industry in Michigan and just the kind of impact that it has.” Beyond industry growth, Sterling Heights is backing local veterans through a partnership with Sterling Heights-based Koz Heating and Cooling’s Heat 4 Heroes program, which helps military, police and fire veterans struggling with utility bills. Fundraising is set for the city’s Veterans Day parade and events Tuesday, November 11 at the city’s Senior Center. “The industry itself is incredibly important to the city, both from a business standpoint and from a resident standpoint,” Bonner said, adding that Sterling Heights honors veterans year-round through parades and public recognition.
