Days after a post-graduate doctor from the Forensic Science Department of government-run Gandhi Hospital was arrested following the seizure of synthetic and imported narcotics worth around ₹3 lakh from his Musheerabad residence, the Telangana government has moved to tighten oversight in medical institutions. The Director of Medical Education (DME) has issued a circular on Thursday directing all government medical colleges in the State to reinforce discipline and prevent recurrence of such incidents. The order instructed principals of government medical colleges to take immediate and strict action to ensure compliance with preventive measures. As part of the directive, principals have been asked to convene meetings with Heads of Departments (HoDs) and hostel wardens of both boys’ and girls’ hostels to discuss ways to curb drug use and maintain campus discipline. The circular also makes it mandatory for wardens and principals or vice-principals to conduct regular hostel inspections. Additionally, medical colleges have been told to organise awareness and sensitisation sessions in coordination with the Anti-Narcotics Bureau to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse and its legal and health consequences.
