Starbucks is shuttering hundreds of underperforming locations across the U.S. while cutting 900 corporate jobs as part of it’s a sweeping restructuring plan.
Last week, the company said it would end the year with 18,300 coffeehouse locations across the U.S. and Canada, and that its overall North American store count would decline by around one percent, suggesting the net number of closures to be around 180.
Newsweek has contacted Starbucks via email for comment.
Why It Matters
Many stores have already closed following the announcement, prompting backlash from the company’s unionized workers, who have been locked in negotiations with Starbucks since last April. Many have staged picket lines outside the shuttering locations, and have used the closures to support their broader case for unionization.

While Starbucks has not released a list of the locations impacted by last week’s announcement, various news outlets have confirmed a selection of stores that have already closed as part of the company’s streamlining efforts. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, in last week’s announcement, said: “I shared earlier this year that we were carefully reviewing our North America coffeehouse portfolio through the additional lens of our Back to Starbucks plan. Our goal is for every coffeehouse to deliver a warm and welcoming space with a great atmosphere and a seat for every occasion.
“During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed.”
Starbucks Workers United said: “It has never been more clear why baristas at Starbucks need the backing of a union. We’re demanding Starbucks finalize a fair union contract with 12,000 union baristas. For less than one average day’s sales, we can address the remaining items in the contract and move forward.
What Happens Next?
A Google sheet cited by several news outlets and StarbucksEverywhere, a website focused on the coffee chain, have tracked over 500 closures since the company’s announcement, though these have not been verified.
Starbucks said it was “working hard” to offer affected employees transfers to nearby locations, and that others would receive “comprehensive severance packages.”
On Tuesday, Starbucks Workers United said it had secured a number concessions from the company relating to the layoffs, including severance for union workers who reject a transfer offer, and extended health benefits for affected union partners.
