Star NFL Linebacker Announces Cancer Diagnosis

Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton revealed Monday that he underwent surgery last Friday for testicular cancer after being diagnosed earlier in the week. Singleton, 31, is in his seventh NFL season and fourth with the Broncos. He played in Thursday night’s 10-7 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, recording nine total tackles. The Montana State alum informed his teammates of his condition Monday morning before going public. “Thankfully, we believe the cancer was caught early with a great prognosis for me and my family. While we are still awaiting some additional test results, I fully expect to return to the field in the coming weeks,” Singleton said in a statement on social media. Routine drug test leads to surprising diagnosis Singleton explained that two weeks ago, he was notified that a random NFL drug test determined he had elevated levels of the hormone hcG in his system. “Without a doubt, I knew with how diligent I am with what goes into my body that this was not from anything external I may have taken,” Singleton said. “After speaking with my agent and my wife, we decided to book an appointment with a urologist.” Last Monday, Singleton visited Dr. Andrew Silavy, who told him he showed signs of a testicular tumor. After contacting the Broncos, he was directed to another doctor who confirmed the diagnosis. After Friday’s surgery, Singleton says he is on the “road to a full recovery.” “I wrestled with sharing such personal information publicly. But the fact is, if it helps one person decide to pay closer attention to their body, then it is well worth it,” he added. A tremendous season interrupted It remains to be seen when Singleton will be back on the field, though it’s obvious his health is of greater importance. Through 10 games this season, Singleton leads the Broncos with 89 total tackles. He also has one sack and one forced fumble. The Broncos are 8-2 and in a three-way tie with the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts for the best record in the AFC. We’ll see how they handle Singleton’s absence.
