For Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, the glamour of Bollywood wasn’t confined to the big screen. During his early career at a Mumbai hotel, he saw stars up close, including a family moment where Amitabh Bachchan firmly reminded his son Abhishek Bachchan not to waste food.
Amitabh Bachchan would eat at Juhu hotel
Recalling his days at the Centaur Hotel in Juhu, Sokhi said the Bachchan family often visited its Indian restaurant. “I still remember, when Amitabh ji would eat, and if there was any food left on his son’s plate, he would scold him: ‘Abhishek! Finish what is there in your plate. The plate should be empty.’ He would say, ‘No, I’m full.’ His father would say, ‘Why did you take it?’ I remember this very clearly,” the chef shared on Siddharth Kannan’s YouTube channel.
Sridevi’s unusual hotel stay
Sokhi also remembered Sridevi’s long presence at the same hotel. “She would stay at the hotel for two years at a stretch. She had a fixed room. But she wouldn’t eat there. Her food was brought in specially from a place called Harish. They had great Mangalorean food. Her spot boy would bring her a special tiffin with fish curry and all, but she would only have daal and steamed rice from the hotel,” he revealed.
Bollywood’s off-screen hangout place
According to Sokhi, the hotel was once a favourite hangout for film stars. “Sabse bada (adda tha). We have seen Dharmendra’s son’s wedding, we have seen awards, we have seen Madhuri Dixit’s rise. She would come to the Chinese restaurant. We have seen all this. Full Bollywood used to be there,” he said.
Celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi has been keeping busy with multiple ventures recently. He recently wrapped up judging Laughter Chefs – Unlimited Entertainment Season 2, where Elvish Yadav and Karan Kundrra emerged as winners. He’s also expanding his restaurant chain, opening the 11th outlet of Karigari in Connaught Place, Delhi. On the festive front, Sokhi brought the flavours of Pujo to life in Kolkata through a live cooking session, delighting food enthusiasts with traditional treats.
