SRC appoints Zhanda-chaired ZRU Interim Management Committee

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has appointed a five-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU), following the dissolution of the previous board over governance and financial accountability issues.

The IMC, which is tasked with restoring stability to the sport, will be chaired by former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and massive investor Paddy Zhanda.

The appointment of the new committee, which includes Latifa Kassim, Gareth Crabbe, Wellington Magaya, and Godwin Jaws Murambiwa, was announced in a press statement released on September 23, 2025. The IMC’s mandate is for a one-year term with six-month reviews.

According to the statement, the IMC is composed of “experienced professionals with expertise in governance, finance, and rugby administration.” Their primary objective is to restore financial accountability within the ZRU and ensure the uninterrupted participation of national teams in both domestic and international competitions.

A key focus for the committee will be preparing for the 2027 Rugby World Cup through the implementation of a High-Performance Strategy. The IMC is also mandated to initiate a constitutional review process, safeguard the welfare of athletes (including the women’s team, the Lady Sables), and liaise directly with international bodies World Rugby and Rugby Africa to secure technical and financial support.

SRC Chairman Dr. Nathaniel Madzivanyika emphasized that the IMC’s establishment “marks a new chapter for Zimbabwean rugby” and that the focus is on “stability, accountability, and success on the world stage.” He added that the national teams are fully supported as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup.

The SRC’s decision has the full endorsement of the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, World Rugby and Rugby Africa.
