More and more, it is becoming clear that this is becoming Victor Wembanyama’s world and that we’re merely living in it. The third-year 7-foot-4 superstar center has had some ups and downs to start this season, but after several subpar scoring games in a row, he reached a unique peak on Monday when his San Antonio Spurs took on the surprising Chicago Bulls. Early in the fourth quarter, San Antonio trailed by 13, and it looked like it was on its way to defeat. To that point, Wembanyama had been solid, but he exploded in the fourth quarter with 18 points while making six of his eight shot attempts, including all three of his 3-point tries, to lead his team to a 121-117 win and an 8-2 record. For the game, Wembanyama finished with 38 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five blocks. While it wasn’t his first game with at least 10 rebounds, five assists and five blocks, it was the first time he — or anyone in NBA history — had ever recorded at least 35 points, 10 boards, five assists, five blocks and five 3-pointers in a single contest. He has a one-of-a-kind blend of scoring skills, ball-handling abilities, outside shooting touch, passing skills and defensive prowess that have been making jaws drop across the league. So far this season, he’s averaging 25.7 points, 12.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and an NBA-high 3.9 blocks a game while shooting 50.6% from the field. He has bulked up to 235 pounds, and he has changed his method of attack to one that is better suited to his natural talents. (Photo by Geoff Stellfox/Getty Images) In two prior seasons, he often settled for outside shots, and last season, he attempted 8.8 3-pointers a game while 33.8% of his overall shot attempts came from within 10 feet of the basket. So far this season, he’s down to 4.3 3-point tries a game, and 50% of his shot attempts are coming from within 10 feet, while just under a quarter of his field-goal attempts are being taken from beyond the arc. The fact that he has gotten San Antonio to tie the Denver Nuggets for the second-best record in the Western Conference is all the more impressive when one considers how young its roster is, as well as the fact that star guard De’Aaron Fox didn’t make his season debut until two games ago. Standout rookie guard Dylan Harper, the son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper, is recovering from a calf strain and will be out for a few more weeks.
