SpiceJet to induct widebody Airbus A340 as part of fleet expansion

SpiceJet has signed a lease agreement to bring a widebody Airbus A340 aircraft into its fleet. The aircraft is expected to arrive in India by the end of September, with operations planned to begin in the first week of October. The addition of the A340 is part of SpiceJet’s ongoing effort to increase capacity and expand its network.Initially, the Airbus A340 will be operated under a wet lease arrangement, which includes crew, maintenance, and insurance. The airline plans to later move to a damp lease model, which provides more operational flexibility while allowing it to manage certain aspects of the aircraft’s operation. Regulatory approvals are required for the long-term operation of the aircraft, which is intended to remain in the fleet beyond a year.SpiceJet is also in discussions to lease a second Airbus A340, signalling a potential further expansion of its fleet. The widebody aircraft can be used on long-haul and high-capacity routes, allowing the airline to manage growing passenger demand on domestic and international services. This development follows SpiceJet’s agreements to induct 18 Boeing 737 aircraft, including four Boeing 737 MAX planes, which are scheduled to join the fleet from October 2025. Together, the new aircraft are expected to increase seating capacity and provide additional operational options for the airline.Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer at SpiceJet, said, “We are introducing the Airbus A340 into our fleet as part of our plans to expand our domestic and international operations. The aircraft will allow us to operate on routes with higher demand. Discussions are ongoing for another A340, alongside the planned induction of Boeing 737 aircraft.”Live EventsThe Airbus A340 is a long-range, four-engine aircraft commonly used for international and high-density routes. The aircraft’s induction is aimed at supporting the airline’s operational requirements and managing capacity across its network. The airline has indicated that it will manage operations and crew allocation as part of the lease arrangements. The wet lease allows SpiceJet to operate the aircraft without immediately taking on full responsibility for crew and maintenance, while the planned transition to a damp lease will give the airline more control over operations.SpiceJet’s fleet expansion coincides with a period of rising passenger demand in the domestic and international aviation market. By adding the Airbus A340 and additional Boeing 737 aircraft, the airline will have more options to schedule flights and respond to demand fluctuations.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
