The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has educated his colleague, Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A Plus, about the removal of a parliamentary committee member. According to him, the Speaker has no power to effect the removal of any committee member. “He should know and understand that the speaker has no powers to remove any member of parliament from any committee, not even the leader of Government business in the house has such powers.” This is in response to the Gomoa Central MP’s petition to Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin seeking the removal of Abena Osei-Asare as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Kennedy, in a Facebook post, said the petition was dead on arrival. He explained that the power lies with the leadership of the caucuses, which can alter the membership of any committee. “If he thinks the Hon. Member has done anything unparliamentary, he should invoke the appropriate sections of standing order against her, but to call the speaker to remove her as the chairperson of the Public Account Committee is nothing but a political bravado. I wish my colleague would withdraw this petition immediately to avoid any embarrassment to himself.” Story by Hajara Fuseini
