Southwest Airlines has undergone several high-profile changes over the past several months, overhauling its boarding procedure to embrace assigned seating, eliminating its longstanding “bags fly free” policy, and even rolling out its first-ever airport lounges. All of these changes have been a part of a larger plan that Southwest hopes will boost profits and allow it to compete with legacy airlines like Delta, United, and American, creating more premium options for its customers. As Southwest rolls out its first-ever premium seating option on its flights, it sounds like it is offering some special perks for those customers, as well. Southwest Rolls Out Extra Legroom Seats Earlier this year, Southwest Airlines announced that, in addition to moving to an assigned seating model, it would also roll out new extra legroom seats for purchase, offering more of a premium option for their customers. The seats themselves do offer a bit more legroom for travelers, but they aren’t exactly comparable to first-class or business class offerings on most other airlines. They aren’t premium recliner seats, they aren’t divided from the rest of the cabin, and they don’t come with a hot meal. However, they do come with some special perks. Special Perk For Extra Legroom Customers While the extra legroom seats may not be quite as much of an upgrade as most other first-class or business class options at other airlines, Sean Cudahy of The Points Guy revealed some special perks that those customers receive while on board. Cudahy had the chance to try out Southwest’s new extra-legroom experience on a recent ceremonial flight from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to the airline’s Dallas Love Field (DAL) home base. In a detailed review of the new experience, Cudahy revealed that customers who purchase the extra-legroom seats are offered free premium beverages, including alcohol. Additionally, passengers are offered Wonderful pistachios, a snack choice not available elsewhere in the cabin. So while it may not be a true luxury experience, it does have its perks.
