A resident protested, saying students are denied based on where they live.
DARIEN, IL – Orchestra classes may be axed from the schedule at Hinsdale South High School, which drew a resident’s objection.
At Thursday’s school board meeting, Burr Ridge resident Adolph Galinski said it’s obvious that orchestra courses will remain at Hinsdale Central because its feeder schools offer orchestra programs. South’s feeders do not.
But he said feeder orchestra experience is not a requirement to take part in District 86’s courses.
“It is tragic that District 86 will now deny students access to orchestra music instruction because of where they live, even though their parents pay taxes to sustain that instruction,” Galinski said.
Galinski offered a solution: Allow South-residing students who want to take orchestra courses to attend Central full time.
In its discussions on the program of studies, the board addressed Galinski’s objection, but not his suggestion.
They said Central could hold orchestra courses during lunch or the early-bird period before school. That would let South students join such classes, although that may mean they miss parts of other courses because of travel.
Members asked Superintendent Michael Lach which option – lunch or the early-bird period – would be less impactful on students’ schedules.
Lach said he would need to speak first with officials from the two schools.
