Southampton Considering Tonda Eckert for Permanent Role After QPR Win

Tonda Eckert will remain in charge of Southampton for their next Championship game, a home clash with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has revealed. The 32-year-old head coach got off to a winning start on Wednesday, beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 away and securing Southampton’s first victory in six games. While the club continue to assess potential candidates for the vacancy at St Mary’s, Southampton are also reported to be considering Eckert for the full-time position. Saints appointed the German as interim boss following Will Still’s sacking on Sunday, just five months after welcoming the 33-year-old on a three-year deal. The south coast club seem unlikely to reunite with a familiar name in the dugout, with returns of both former bosses Ralph Hasenhuttl and Russell Martin ruled out. Southampton Considering Eckert for Full-Time Role Thomas, writing on X, said Southampton are considering Eckert as a candidate for the permanent manager role at St Mary’s following his winning start on Wednesday. The report comes amid suggestions that Southampton sporting director Johannes Spors is looking towards Germany for his next managerial appointment on the south coast. The 43-year-old is leading Saints’ search for a new permanent boss and is believed to be considering several candidates following Martin’s exit, with former West Brom boss Tony Mowbray among those linked with the role. Southampton won just 13 of their Championship games under Still, drawing six and losing five, and crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the third round after a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in September. Saints were booed off after their 2-0 defeat by Preston North End on Saturday, which turned out to be Still’s final game in the dugout. Before joining Southampton as Under-21s head coach in July, Eckert coached at the Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig academies and spent the past three seasons at Serie A side Genoa. During his time in Italy, he worked under three different managers – Alberto Gilardino, Alexander Blessin and Patrick Vieira.
