South Carolina health officials bringing car seat safety to the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – This week is Child Passenger Safety Week and the South Carolina Department of Public Health is hosting events to help families make sure their children are riding safely.
Last year, data showed nearly 90% of children under 10 were using lap and shoulder belts before they were ready, and more than half of car seats were installed incorrectly.
Experts say parents often move their kids out of car seats too soon.
That’s why the department is holding several seat check events this week across the Lowcountry.
Certified technicians will help parents and caregivers confirm that seats are properly installed based on the child’s age, height and weight.
They’ll also check for recalls and provide one-on-one education.
Two upcoming events are set for Monday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Bells Highway Walmart in Walterboro and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Front Street Tweedle Beetle in Summerville.
Health officials say using a car seat correctly can cut the risk of fatal injury by 50%.
The in-person checks are free and appointments are available.
Parents can also schedule a virtual appointment.
