Pakistan has taken the handshake controversy to another level, lodging a complaint with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and ICC besides reportedly threatening to pull out of their next match of the ongoing Asia Cup against UAE if match referee Andy Pycroft isn’t removed from the tournament.
After India players, led by Suryakumar Yadav, didn’t shake the hands of Pakistan players following the end of their Asia Cup match in Dubai, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, without naming any team, expressed his disappointment at the lack of sportsmanship.
Later Naqvi posted on social media that PCB has demanded the immediate removal of referee Pycroft alleging violations of ICC Code of Conduct and MCC Laws pertaining to cricket.
When legendary India captain Sourav Ganguly was asked about India’s snub, he put the onus on Suryakumar, refusing to wade into the controversy.
“You will have to ask Suryakumar Yadav, he has to answer. I’m too far, launching my ethnic brand. He’s also answered it… Everyone has their own side of the story, that’s what it is,” Ganguly said.
‘Terror Must Stop’
In the lead-up to the India-Pakistan clash, there were calls for boycotting the contest with BCCI being criticised for going ahead with it in light of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed.
“Terror must stop, that’s most important, all around the world, not just India and Pakistan. You’ve seen so many things happening, so that also must stop. But sports also cannot stop. Terror has to stop all around the world,” Ganguly said.
What Suryakumar Yadav Said
India skipper Suryakumar defended his team against allegations of acting against the spirit of the game.
“Few things in life are ahead of sportsman spirit. We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and we stand with their families. As I said, we dedicate this win to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor,” said Suryakumar.
“Our government and BCCI, we were aligned together. The rest, we came here, we took a call. I feel we came here just to play the game. I think we gave them a proper reply,” he added.
