Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly lauded India for their remarkable victory over Pakistan in the ongoing T20 Asia Cup Super Fours and expressed confidence in India’s chances of winning the tournament. India secured a commanding six-wicket win against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday.
Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying to ANI, “India is a very good team. We defeated Pakistan easily in the Super 4s match. We have a good chance to win (Asia Cup). I hope we will play well.”
Can India Win Asia Cup?
The group stage match saw India dominate with a seven-wicket victory, while Pakistan posed a significant challenge in the Super Fours clash by scoring 171/5, their highest against India in T20Is when batting first. Sahibzada Farhan’s composed 58-run innings, aided by luck, and Faheem Ashraf’s quick 20* off eight deliveries contributed to Pakistan’s total.
In chasing the 172-run target, Shubman Gill (47) and Abhishek Sharma (74) set the tone with an aggressive approach, dismantling Pakistan’s lacklustre bowling attack. Gill utilised his orthodox technique, whereas Abhishek showcased his destructive skills. Together, they built a 105-run opening stand in 9.5 overs, relieving pressure from the middle order.
With India’s unbeaten streak extending to four in the tournament, they are set to face Bangladesh in Dubai on Wednesday. Pakistan will aim to regain their form against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.
On Monday, Ganguly was re-elected unopposed as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, replacing his brother Snehasish Ganguly, who held the position for nearly three years. With no other candidates contesting the election, Ganguly assumed the role unopposed. He had previously served as CAB president from 2015 to 2019.
Ganguly commented on his re-election, stating, “I have worked as a president for five years before this as well. We will do what is best. There is an immense craze for cricket in India. There is a lot of talent. It will be our work to give direction to this talent.”
