Sophie Devine Receives Guard Of Honour From ENG, NZ Players On Her Retirement | Watch

New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine found it hard to hold back her tears as she walked out with her teammates for one final time in Women’s ODIs. As the White Ferns faced England in their last group-stage game of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, Devine prepared to lead her side one last time before stepping away from the format. It was an emotional moment — one that Devine had anticipated in the lead-up to the match. Yet, despite her composure, the all-rounder fought back tears as she stood arm-in-arm with her teammates during the national anthem. However, the Kiwis couldn’t make it a fitting farewell for their captain. Batting first, New Zealand were bowled out for 168 in 38.2 overs, with Devine scoring 23 off 35 and Georgia Plimmer top-scoring with 43 off 57. England chased down the target comfortably in 29.2 overs, winning by eight wickets. Devine received a guard of honour as she walked away from ODIs — a gesture she had initially declined but couldn’t refuse as players from both sides lined up to give the New Zealand skipper a heartfelt farewell. Go well Sophie! ? There will other ferns blooming in that white fern garden, but none will be like you. What an ambassador for her team, her sport, and the entire nation of New Zealand ? Massive respect, always ? Really hope she’s back for the T20 WC defence #SophieDevine pic.twitter.com/B4Dh38QDtP — Gaurav Nandan Tripathi | गौरव नंदन त्रिपाठी (@Cric_Beyond_Ent) October 26, 2025 Earlier, during the toss, Devine admitted she had already let the emotions get the better of her while preparing for this final match against England. “Look, it is an emotional day. There have certainly already been a few tears and things like that,” admitted Devine. “But I just want to go out there and enjoy it, play with a smile on my face. It’s been a real honour [representing New Zealand.]” Devine Retires As A New Zealand Legend Sophie Devine’s illustrious career stands as one of the finest in New Zealand’s history — over 4000 runs, more than 100 wickets, and an enduring legacy as both a leader and a match-winner. Since taking over the captaincy in 2020 following Amy Satterthwaite’s exit, Devine has inspired a generation with her composure and all-round brilliance.
