Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested by Ladakh Police on Friday, two days after violence broke out in Leh during protests demanding statehood and inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and claimed four lives. However, the charges levelled against Wangchuk are yet to be known. The government has blamed Wangchuk for the violent protests and alleged that the activist ‘instigated the youth’ with references like ‘Nepal’s Gen Z protest’ and ‘Arab Spring-style protest.’The arrest of the climate activist, led by DGP S D Singh Jamwal, comes a day after the Union Home Ministry cancelled the FCRA licence of his Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). Ministry’s action was based on several alleged discrepancies detected in the accounts of the organisation including a fund transfer from Sweden which the ministry found was against “national interest”.Live Events Curfew in Leh remains Curfew remained in force in Leh town for the third consecutive day. The restrictions were imposed on Wednesday evening after widespread clashes left four people dead and around 90 injured during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB). Police and paramilitary personnel in riot gear continued to patrol the streets. Over 50 people have been detained so far.Authorities indicated to PTI that curfew relaxations may be allowed later in the day to enable residents to buy essential supplies, which many said were running short. All schools, colleges, and anganwadi centres in Leh have been ordered shut for two days by District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk. Prohibitory orders also remain in place in Kargil, where heavy security deployment continues. Shops and business establishments, however, reopened on Friday after a day-long closure called by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). A high-level Home Ministry team reached Leh on Thursday and reviewed the security situation with the Lt Governor, police, civil officials, and representatives of LAB. The meetings decided that a preparatory session with the ministry will be held in New Delhi on September 27 or 28, followed by an official round of talks on a four-point agenda. Representatives from LAB, KDA, and Ladakh MP Mohd Hanifa Jan will participate. The next round of formal talks is scheduled for October 6. The LAB and KDA have been spearheading the agitation for four years, pressing for statehood, Sixth Schedule safeguards, separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil, and a Public Service Commission. While earlier discussions with the Centre yielded progress on job guarantees and parliamentary representation, statehood and Sixth Schedule remain unresolvedAdd as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
