Bollywood is famously intertwined with dynastic and marital ties, creating many prominent father-in-law and son-in-law pairs. Among all, there was one actor during the 1970s, known for his handsome looks and comedic timing, who got married to a the daughter of an icon. Take this hint — he appeared in a number of notable films, including Chori Mera Kaam, Chor Ke Ghar Chor, Angoor, Golmaal, Khatta Meetha and Rang Birangi. Well, we are talking about actor Deven Verma, who was married to Bollywood legend Ashok Kumar’s daughter, Rupa Ganguly. Deven Verma was born on October 23, 1937, in Kutch, Gujarat, but his family later relocated to Pune. His father, Baldev Singh Verma, had a silver business. After working in the silver trade for sometime, he got into film distribution. Deven developed an interest in acting. He started performing in theatrical shows and mimicking popular artists. While performing in a stage play, filmmaker BR Chopra noticed him and was so amazed by his talent that he offered him a role in his film Dharamputra. The actor received Rs 600 for the film. Although Dharamputra wasn’t a box office success, it proved to be a major stepping stone for Deven Verma. He went on to appear in films like Gumrah, Aaj Aur Kal, Rishte Naate, Anupama and others. He was celebrated for his clean, situational and witty comedy. He relied on sharp dialogue, expressions and the funny absurdity of the situations his characters found themselves in. During his career spanning decades, he worked with notable filmmakers including Gulzar, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterji. His last appearance was in the 2003 film Calcutta Mail. The actor died in 2014 due to a heart attack.
