Nigel Farage’s latest comments regarding same-sex relationships are trash and we have the proof.
Earlier this week as he welcomed former Conservative MP MP Danny Kruger to the Reform UK party, Farage, was asked about Kruger’s thoughts on gay marriage. Kruger said in 2023 that heterosexual marriage was “the only basis for a safe and successful society.”
In answering Farage, a man twice married and currently separated from wife number two, said, “the most stable relationships tend to be between men and women.” The MP for Clacton then added, “I think one thing for certain is children who have two stable parents have a better chance in life. And the most stable relationships, maybe not my example, but the most stable relationships, the ones that last the longest, tend to be between men and women.”
What Farage clearly was unaware of were statistics from the Office for National Statistics showing that 103,816 legal partnership were dissolved in 2023. And only 1,891 of those (1.8%) were same-sex relationships.
So, here’s a list of some successful “stable” LGBTQ+ relationships that we know of, just to prove Farage wrong.
Elton John and David Furnish
These two have been together since 1993, marrying in 2014 after entering a civil partnership in 2005. We consider that pretty “stable.”
Miriam Margolyes and Heather Sutherland
The Harry Potter star and the Australian historian have been a pairing since they met in 1968. That’s nearly 60 years! Speaking to the Daily Mail in August, Margolyes described Sutherland as her “person.”
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
These two cuties got married in 2014 and met ten years prior to that. They started dating the same year and well, the rest is history.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita
The Modern Family star and his partner announced in 2020 they were expecting their first child. They dated for two years before getting engaged in 2012 and married in 2013.
Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer
Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer tied the knot earlier this year over Easter. Despite not properly connecting until a few years later, the pair first met on a film set in 2013.
Colman Domingo and Raúl Domingo
The story of how these two met is epic. A chance encounter outside a Walgreens in California 20 years or so ago and having the same idea to post an ad to find the other on Craigslist shows these two were meant to be together.
Joel Kim Booster and John-Michael Kelly
Joel and John dated for years before they got engaged in 2024 when the former proposed to the latter. Together they make the sweetest couple.
Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor
Actresses Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor have been together since 2015. They’re recognised as one of the best-known same-sex couples in Hollywood explaining that, “We’re together when we wanna be and we’re not when we don’t.”
Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner
Grace and Frankie‘s Lily Tomlin married her writer and collaborator, Jane Wagner, in 2013 and have been together for 54 years. They first met in 1971 and have collaborated on a number of projects.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
The pair first married in California in 2008. They recently moved to the UK where DeGeneres confirmed they were looking at getting remarried in light of attacks on gay marriages in the US.
So, it looks like Nigel Farage needs to rethink his take on “stable” relationships.
