Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Monday appointed veteran politician and academic Prof. Saalim Aliyow Ibroow as the country’s new Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, marking the return of one of Somalia’s longest-serving public figures to government. The Prime Minister’s Office said the decision followed a review of the ministry’s expanding mandate in job creation and social welfare reform, areas central to the government’s agenda to improve livelihoods nationwide. Prof. Ibroow, a seasoned administrator with over three decades of service, previously served as deputy prime minister and acting prime minister during the Transitional Federal Government. His appointment marks the 18th time he has joined Somalia’s Council of Ministers, beginning with Omar Arteh Qalib’s administration in 1991. Over his long career, Ibroow has led several key ministries, including finance, livestock, culture, and higher education. He also ran for the position of speaker of parliament after Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan was removed from office. Ibroow currently serves as Somalia’s national representative to UNESCO.
