Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s federal government has condemned the brutal rape of an 11-year-old girl in Puntland, describing it as a “barbaric act” and urging the swift prosecution of those responsible. The assault occurred on October 30 in Hingalool, a town in the Sanaag region, and targeted Samiira Abdikarim Mohamud, according to the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development. The case has drawn national outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections for women and children in Somalia. “This horrific attack violates the very principles of humanity,” the ministry said in a statement Tuesday. “Every Somali child has the right to live in peace and safety, free from any form of abuse or exploitation.” Authorities in Puntland confirmed that several suspects were arrested shortly after the attack. The ministry praised the Puntland Police Command and local officials for their swift response and urged judicial institutions to ensure the perpetrators face justice “without delay and in full accordance with the law.” The statement also condemned recent acts of violence against women and children in Galmudug State and other parts of central Somalia, describing them as part of a troubling pattern of gender-based abuse. It called on communities, religious scholars, and elders to take a more active role in prevention. “We will not tolerate any act that threatens the safety, dignity, or freedom of Somali women and children,” the ministry said, adding that both Somali culture and Islam forbid sexual violence. Rights advocates say Somalia’s weak judicial enforcement, combined with stigma and insecurity, continues to hinder justice for survivors. The government pledged to strengthen cooperation with state authorities and civil society groups to improve awareness and support systems. The Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development said it will continue to monitor the Hingalool case closely as “a test of the nation’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.” Opinion| Privacy Policy|Sports|Somali Music|Somali Map All Rights Reserved Copyright. © 1999-2025, www.hiiraan.com
