Soesdyke Junction to be improved under National Beautification Plan

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand; Minister of Housing and Water, Colin Croal; and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with political responsibility for the East Bank of Demerara, Kwame McCoy, on Tuesday visited the Soesdyke Junction to examine ways in which the area could be improved under the government’s National Beautification Plan.

The Ministers browsed the location, which serves as a major hub for transportation, vending, and evening social activities, to gain a first-hand understanding of the needs and opportunities present. The aim is to explore how the space can be made more conducive to the services it already offers while at the same time enhancing the comfort and experience of commuters, small vendors, and members of the public who use the area for recreation and entertainment.

This initial visit marks the beginning of what will be a broader process. The Ministers explained that consultations with key stakeholders, including local authorities, vendors, transportation operators, and community members, will follow. These discussions will help shape a practical and inclusive plan to upgrade and beautify the junction, while maintaining its role as a vital space for economic activity and community life.

The initiative falls under the government’s wider efforts to improve public spaces, enhance safety and accessibility, and create welcoming environments that reflect pride in communities across the country.
