Snowfall is officially returning next year with a new spinoff series. Aired on FX for six seasons from 2017 to 2023, the crime drama follows an African American crime family in South Central Los Angeles during the 1980s crack epidemic, depicting their efforts to profit from selling crack cocaine while also exploring the CIA's role in combating communism in Nicaragua. Snowfall has received rave reviews from critics and been frequently compared to The Wire due to the shows' shared focus on the drug trade, institutional corruption, and the impact of crime on communities, resulting in an average 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, FX has officially ordered an untitled Snowfall spinoff series, which is set to premiere on Hulu next year. The project comes from acclaimed producer Malcolm Spellman, along with Snowfall producers Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson. The spinoff will be set in 1990s Los Angeles, shortly after the events of the original series, and follows a recovering addict determined to bring West Coast rap to the mainstream as gang violence intensifies, and record labels seek to profit from hip-hop culture. The spinoff will bring back Gail Bean and Isaiah John, reprising their respective roles as Wanda Bell-Simmons and Leon Simmons from the original series. The latter is Franklin's closest friend and trusted second-in-command within the Family, who is connected to the PJ Watts Crips, while the former is Leon's wife, who struggles with a severe crack cocaine addiction and eventually enters recovery. New cast members include Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III. Nick Grad, the President of FX Entertainment, shared the following statement on the Snowfall spinoff series: This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution. We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean and, as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. Snowfall was one of the most successful FX dramas ever and we’re excited that Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme and other veterans of the Snowfall creative team are on board.
