Snapchat To Soon Charge You For Storing Old Photos And Videos, Here's What We Know So Far

Snapchat is all set to change the way people save photos on the platform, and that doesn’t seem like good news for the majority of people. The app is going to charge for its Memories feature all over the globe, and this move has welcomed a lot of criticism. As for the Memories feature, it allows users to save photos and videos initially shared for 24 hours or less. The feature has served as a free service since the time of its launch back in 2016. According to the latest Snapchat policy, all users with more than 5GB of saved content will need to pay a certain amount to gain access. Snapchat Memories To Become a Paid Feature In an official blog post, Snap has mentioned that the payment feature is going to a global rollout gradually. Until now, the pricing for all the regions has not been revealed yet. Nonetheless, a spokesperson from Snapchat told TechCrunch that the 100GB plan will be available for $1.99 per month, and the 250GB storage will be available for $3.99 per month. All users on the platform exceeding 5GB storage will be offered 12 months of temporary storage and the option to download their saved content. Talking a little about the stats, Snapchat users have saved more than one trillion Memories until now with the Memories feature. After the paywall, all the users who want to retain large archives of images will be asked to upgrade and opt for paid storage plans. The move by Snapchat is facing a lot of criticism on social media channels, as the customers are saying it is a greedy and unfair step. Snapchat responded to the same by saying, ‘It is never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it.’ What’s scarier is that industry experts have said charging for storage on social media is going to become a common practice a few years down the line. It will be interesting to see how things unfold for Snapchat and if the users agree to pay or they will leave dodge it with a hack.
