Snake Bites, Darkness & Fear: Woman Rescued After 54 Hours In ‘Well Of Death’

In a dramatic real-life scenario reminiscent of survival tales in movies, a 48-year-old woman in China managed to escape from a life-threatening situation after being trapped in a well for 54 hours.
According to the South China Morning Post, the woman, known as Qin, resides near Quanzhou City in Fujian Province. She fell into an old, concealed well during a walk in the woods.
The well, covered by weeds and invisible from the outside, proved to be a formidable trap. When Qin failed to return home that evening, her family grew anxious and initiated a search. Unable to locate her, they informed the police the following day.
Son’s Call For Help Led To Rescue
The woman’s son sought help from rescuers. Soon, a 10-member team led by Captain Du Xiaohang began searching the area with a thermal imaging drone.
Around noon, they heard faint cries from the bushy area surrounding the well. Clearing the bushes, they found Qin submerged in water, clinging desperately to the wall.
Inside the well, Qin faced harrowing conditions. In the pitch-dark environment, swarms of mosquitoes bit her relentlessly, while snakes swam in the water. At one point, a water snake bit her hand, but fortunately, it was non-poisonous.
How Did She Survive?
Despite these challenges, Qin’s determination to survive was fuelled by thoughts of her family, including her elderly parents and college-going daughter. Her ability to swim allowed her to hold onto a stone embedded in the well wall, keeping herself above the water. By digging out three more stones and using them as steps, she managed to stay afloat.
After 54 gruelling hours, rescuers finally pulled Qin from the well and rushed her to hospital. She sustained two broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and severe injuries to her hands. Thankfully, her condition is currently stable, and doctors are optimistic about her full recovery after a few days of observation and treatment.
