Acquisition Lorton-based Northeast Contracting Co., a commercial roofing and building envelope contractor, acquired Portsmouth-based Ducks Roofing, a leading roofing company for health care, government and commercial facilities in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina since 1976. “NECC has been actively serving the Tidewater region for over a decade, and with the integration of Ducks, we’re establishing a dedicated branch led by trusted local leader Scott Gibson,” said Cagen Williams, CEO of NECC. “Scott and his team bring deep local knowledge, strong execution, and nearly 50 years of earned reputation for reliability. We will continue to serve Ducks Roofing clients with the same responsiveness they’ve always known — and expand our capabilities in both service and construction through a permanent local presence.” Appointed/elected The Old Beach Farmers Market in the Vibe Creative District announced Jeremy Maloney as the new president of the nonprofit board. Maloney, president of Altruistic Design in the arts district, is focused on community-building and played a key role in shaping Vibe through his work with small businesses, adaptive reuse in older buildings and other opportunities. He also serves on the city’s Resort Advisory Commission, Planning and Design Review Committee and the Old Beach Design Review Committee. Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced additional board appointments. Dr. Bryant Gray of Newport News, emergency medicine physician, was appointed to the State Child Fatality Review Team. Jonathan W. White, of Newport News, professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University, was appointed to the task force for the identification of the history of formerly enslaved African Americans in Virginia. Barbara L. Inman of Newport News, vice president for student success and enrollment management at Hampton University, was appointed to the Brown V. Board of Education Scholarship Awards Committee. Dawn Matheson of Chesapeake, CEO of Matheson Group, was appointed to the Litter Control and Recycling Fund Advisory Board. Awards and honors The Global Trade Chamber and the 100 Successful Women in Business Network have named Hillary Boyce, founder and CEO of BAFO Services LLC in Norfolk, as one of the 100 Successful Women in Business for 2025. Boyce will be recognized at the Annual Women in Business Convention Nov. 5-6 in Miami. The awards honor women from around the world who have demonstrated leadership excellence in their fields and contributed meaningfully to their communities. Certification Bay Custom Auto in Newport News has been certified by Collision Performance Network, a division of OEC, for maintaining the right tools, equipment, training and facilities necessary to repair participating Automaker brand vehicles according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Bay Custom Auto is also certified by FCA, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan. Grants and donations The Urban League of Hampton Roads hosted a back-to-school supply drive in August where the organization gave away 350 backpacks and school supplies to local children in the Hampton and Newport News area. Walmart donated the backpacks and school supplies. Health care Fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Hill joined Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine & Sports Medicine. The Williamsburg native is a former NCAA Division I football captain and NFL free agent. He specializes in regenerative medicine, sports medicine, arthroscopy, joint preservation and restoration, minimally invasive joint replacement and technology-assisted surgery. He has worked closely with professional athletes and top high school programs. Opening Panera Bread opened its third bakery-cafe in Chesapeake at 217 Carmichael Way in the Hickory area in August. To celebrate, Panera donated $1,000 to Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. U-Haul Co. of Virginia announced that XPS Tidewater, a local flooring supply store at at 1823 County St., signed on as a U-Haul neighborhood dealer to serve the Portsmouth community. Partnership Hook Law, a Hampton Roads elder law firm, is partnering with Marcia Futterman Brodie, a certified independent trainer in Positive Approach to Care, to help families facing the challenges of dementia. Clients of both Hook Law and Brodie will gain access to an integrated suite of services that address the legal, emotional, and practical complexities of dementia care. Brodie will hold office hours by appointment at Hook Law’s offices to offer personalized guidance to families and caregivers. Hook Law and Brodie will also host regular roundtable discussions across the region.
