Smithfield, RI high school antisemitic hazing investigation

An alleged antisemitic hazing incident at a Rhode Island high school is raising concerns for state officials, who are questioning the school district's response. The Jewish Alliance of Rhode Island said five Smithfield High School football players locked a freshman student in a bathroom, sprayed Lysol at the student and yelled antisemitic slurs. NBC affiliate WJAR-TV first reported on the situation on Oct. 10, when the school district released a statement on its investigation. "The investigation confirmed inappropriate conduct among a small number of students," Superintendent Dawn Bartz said in a provided statement. "Disciplinary action has been taken in accordance with district policy, and several student-athletes will not participate for the remainder of the season." The statement went on to say that there would be mandated training and education in response. However, WJAR-TV reports that the involved players were back at practice, which didn't sit well with the victim's family. His parents said his son walked into practice and found himself face-to-face with his alleged assailants. "To find out that the kids were reinstated and to find out in the way that we did, it just says to us that antisemitism is not taken seriously by Smithfield schools," said Adam Greenman, President of The Jewish Alliance of Rhode Island. Bartz, when asked why the students were allowed to return, issued this response: "The disciplinary process has concluded," the statement read. "And we will not be discussing details involving students." Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee has now weighed in, calling for a "thorough investigation" by the school and district. "It is critical that leaders also take action to educate and heal the school community. All our young people must feel safe and supported in their educational environments," the statement, posted on X, reads. Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos also issued a statement: Every young person deserves to feel safe, respected, and protected in their learning environment. What happened to this student is unacceptable, and the handling of the situation has compounded that harm. Unclear disciplinary consequences for those who engaged in antisemitic behavior sends a dangerous and disheartening message to Jewish students, to victims of bullying, and to every Rhode Islander who believes in accountability and decency," it read it part.
