SM Entertainment Introduces New 8-Member Girl Group, But Why Are Fans Concerned

Just months after the debut of the girl group Hearts2Hearts, SM Entertainment, a South Korean entertainment agency, has announced a new girl group. On Thursday, November 6, the Japanese subsidiary of the agency announced the eight-member girl group, named GPP, through social media. SM Entertainment Japan officially shared links to the official website of the group and other social media pages. According to the official website, the name GPP carries a strong meaning, where G stands for Genkai Toppa, a Japanese phrase meaning “breaking limits”, while PP stands for Paper Plane. Together, the girl group’s name reflects their message of rising beyond limits and taking Japanese pop music to the global stage. GPP is set to make its debut on December 16 with the release of its first-ever digital single, Bring It Back. Mika Takamiya, 21, is set to be the group’s main dancer and rapper, having previously worked as a choreographer and trainer. Mia Newby, 23, who is half British, half Japanese, formerly trained under HYBE X Geffen with KATSEYE. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Sara Miyazaki used to be a professional dancer, and 21-year-old Momoka Kurita is known for her husky vocal tone. Rinka Ando, 21, appeared on Girls Planet 999 and is the group’s all-rounder. Honoka Ito, 21, is set to be GPP’s main vocalist, whereas Luna Watanabe, 20, will be the visual, and Anami Ozono is the youngest member of the upcoming Japanese group. The announcement by SM Entertainment Japan, however, raised some concerns, with many questioning the timing. A section of the fandom was left worried that the company’s focus might shift from its newer girl group Hearts2Hearts. Internet Reacts To The Introduction Of GPP One user said, “Maybe take care of ur ggs first, SM… now H2H is gonna get the snsd red velvet treatment.” “Considering H2H did not even start promoting in Japan, why rush to debut Japanese GG? You want them to compete?” asked a different person. Another noted, “Man, they can’t even manage the groups they have! They always end up neglecting their girl groups more, too! God, I hope these girls have a chance. Good luck to them in that fuckass company.” Besides the debut of the group, J-Pop lovers will also get to watch a special documentary titled GPP Fly, which will showcase the group’s journey. Following their pre-debut track, GPP will also release their first CD single on January 14.
