Skerrit on new Contour flights: You asked, we delivered, now fill those seats

Dominica recently welcomed its much-anticipated first nonstop service to and from St Thomas.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said, while addressing the official welcome ceremony for American carrier Contour Airlines on Wednesday, that he recalled traveling to St Thomas over a year ago, and the main request of the residents in St. Thomas was non-stop service to Dominica.

Consequently, Contour Airline’s round-trip non-stop flight schedule will link Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Douglas–Charles Airport, and Skerrit is asserting that it needs to be prioritized by travellers.

“When can we get a direct flight from St. Thomas to Dominica? Now you have it,” said Skerrit,

“Counter Airlines is here and they are here to stay, but they’re going to stay as long as we allow them to stay, and the way to allow them to stay is by filling those seats every time, and this is the commitment that we have to give to Contour Airlines in this relationship,” he added.

“We welcome Contour Airlines to Dominica with open arms, and it is left to us as residents of Dominica and those of us who reside in St. Thomas who are Dominicans to ensure that we give priority to flying country airlines to ensure its success,” urged Skerrit. “That is what’s going to make this relationship last for a very long time.”

He continued, “So you in St. Thomas or St. Croix, there is no other airline to fly to Dominica but Contour Airlines.”

In addition to this groundbreaking route, Contour Airlines launched a round-trip nonstop service linking Douglas–Charles Airport with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, starting today, Thursday, September 25, 2025.

According to the Prime Minister, this marks one more step in the journey towards greater connectivity, resilience, and opportunity for Dominicans.

Acting Tourism Minister Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite, while echoing Skerrit’s words, specified that this new service by Contour Airlines enhances Dominica’s global connectivity, reinforcing its commitment to fostering international partnerships.

“Students, business people, and families can now easily connect..[with their] loved ones in other countries as the new route will simplify their lives,” she stated. “This service is more than a new flight. It is a vital move to a more inclusive and interconnected Dominica.”

Additionally, she indicated that the tourism industry forms the foundation of Dominica’s economy as it creates employment opportunities, infrastructure development, and the region’s prosperity.

Lockhart-Hypolite stated, however, that no matter how beautiful a destination, accessibility remains key to unlocking its full potential.

“Reliable airlift is the cornerstone of any successful tourism strategy,” she emphasized. “ With Contour Airlines now in operation, Dominica is better positioned to tap into the growing demand for sustainable tourism.”

Meanwhile, President of Contour Airlines, Ben Munson, explained that a lot of effort was required for this service to come to fruition.

“This is the first time that we are going to be operating regularly scheduled service in the Caribbean, and a lot of work has gone into and continues to go into, making this service a success, and it’s super important for us and for our employees,” he noted. “So for all the members of Contour here and for anyone that might be watching–over 800 folks all around–thank you for everything that you’ve done to be able to make this a reality.”

He went on to state that the initial bookings look great and the company hopes to continue to build that momentum.

“Like was mentioned, we are flying three flights a week with non-stop service to St. Thomas. I think that’s the first time that connection has existed, if not ever, in a very long time, and that creates a great bridge between the U.S. Virgin Islands, the beautiful island of Dominica,” he noted.

Munson added, It also provides a new connecting point to our partners, American and Delta Airlines, through St. Thomas as a gateway, as well to other markets. To complement that, we’re going to be flying four times a week to San Juan. And that’s another great connection into Puerto Rico that’s going to complement some of the other service that exists here, as well as, I think, create that important connectivity to the North America market.”
