Sivakarthikeyan On Why Tamil Cinema Hasn’t Reached Rs 1000-Crore Mark: ‘If We Charged Like...’

Be it larger-than-life entertainers to emotionally packed dramas, Tamil Cinema has delivered films that have impressed audiences across the globe. Despite its top-notch content and brilliant talents, the industry has not achieved the milestone of a Rs 1000-crore grosser at the box office. Actor Sivakarthikeyan, who is basking in the success of his latest release Madharaasi, has now shared his perspective on why Tamil films have not crossed the four-digit crore club, unlike some Hindi and Telugu blockbusters.
Speaking with Cinema Express, Sivakarthikeyan reflected on his past hit Amaran and made it clear that chasing numbers was never a priority. He said, “I said this before, but when we did Amaran, we did not think about the number it would eventually make.”
I Am Not In Favour Of High Ticket Prices: Sivakarthikeyan
The actor added, “Apart from the quality of a film, there are other factors to consider, such as ticket pricing. I am not in favour of increasing the ticket prices, but if we charged like in Bengaluru or Mumbai, then Jailer would have easily crossed Rs 800 crores, if not Rs 1000 crores.”
The North India Factor
During the chat, Sivakarthikeyan also pointed out another hurdle: Tamil cinema’s limited reach in North India. He explained, “Multiplexes in Mumbai will only screen a movie if the digital premiere date is at least eight weeks after the theatrical release. Most Tamil films, however, sign a four-week deal with OTT platforms.”
According to him, Amaran could have made a bigger impact in the northern regions if not for this issue.
Despite the challenges, Sivakarthikeyan remains optimistic about the future of Tamil cinema. “I believe Tamil cinema is getting there, and the elusive Rs 1000 crore accomplishment would be achieved in a couple of years,” he said, highlighting that the industry is evolving rapidly.
What Is Madharaasi About
Sivakarthikeyan’s latest release Madharaasi is winning hearts for its perfect blend of psychological drama, romance and high-octane action. The film follows Raghuram, an orphan who, after heartbreak, meets NIA officer Premnath and gets recruited for a dangerous mission.
Alongside the lead actor, the film also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Vidyut Jammwal, Monisha Vijay, Vikranth and Shabeer Kallarakkal in key roles.
