SIT questions musician in Zubeen Garg death case, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma warns probe may go to CBI if no results

Guwahati: Musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami who was part of a yacht trip related to the sudden death of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg was detained for questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam police.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that the investigation will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the current Special Investigation Team (SIT) fails to deliver results.A senior police officer who does not want to be named said, “ SIT probing the death has taken Goswami into custody for questioning.”The allegations are levelled against Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma and Shekhar Goswami. Multiple FIRs were filed against these people by several police stations. It was alleged in the FIR these people are responsible for negligence leading to death. The death certificate issued by the Singapore authorities had stated “drowning” as the cause of his death.Live Events Mahanta is organiser of Northeast festival while Sharma is manager of the Garg. Goswami is a musician and accompanied Zubeen on a yacht trip. On Thursday an irate mob tried to enter Sharma’s house in Guwahati. SIT also went to the Guwahati based residence of Mahanta and Sharma in search of them. Sarma said, “We all are admirers of Zubeen, nothing less or more. If the SIT fails at any point, we will not hesitate to hand over the case to the CBI. But for now, we must give the SIT time and full cooperation. In court evidence is required,”He added that in the next 15 days many unanswered questions will be answered. Everyone present on the yacht will come questioned. “Post-mortem reports will come, foreign witnesses will be summoned, but this takes time, these things will take time. Those who love Zubeen must not fall prey to rumours or circulate unverified claims.”Sarma said that he has for long suspected that certain individuals are using Zubeen for personal benefits. “Around six years back I had warned Zubeen about the circle around him. I even warned him – both privately and publicly but perhaps it was already too late. Some people used Zubeen’s popularity for personal and political agendas, rather than preserving his artistic legacy.”Though a postmortem had been done in Singapore, the state government decided on Monday to carry out one more, following demands in Assam in order to rule out foul play. The postmortem was carried out by a team of four expert doctors from GMCH, Pragjyotishpur Medical College and AIIMS-Guwahati.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
