Sister of victim in deadly scooter crash urges other riders to wear a helmet

THORNTON, Colo. (KDVR) — The sister of a man killed after colliding with a vehicle while riding an electric scooter is urging other riders to wear a helmet. Shana Long says her 39-year-old brother, Bryan Bookland, was riding his scooter on Thursday night in Thornton when he collided with a driver. Thornton police say the 22-year-old male mini-van driver stayed on-scene, near the intersection of West 88th Avenue and Lipan Street. Bookland was pronounced dead at a local hospital. “My mom got a call from the hospital,” said Long. “Saying that he had been in an accident and she had to hurry to the hospital.” Long said her brother was not wearing a helmet. She is now advocating for other riders to wear one. “They save lives, man,” said the older sister. The Thornton Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact detectives at 720-977-5069. To help pay for funeral expenses and the cost of the scooter, the family has set up the following GoFundMe page, available here.
