Former subpostmaster Sir Alan Bates, has reportedly received a seven-figure sum as settlement for his Horizon compensation claim. Sir Alan, from Llandudno , Conwy , had previously criticised the redress schemes for victims of the Post Office scandal as "quasi-kangaroo courts". The scandal saw around 1,000 people wrongly prosecuted and convicted across the UK between 1999 and 2015 due to Horizon, with many contemplating self-harm. The fight for justice gained momentum after ITV aired the drama 'Mr Bates Vs The Post Office', which shed light on the scandal. Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community no w Sir Alan had earlier told the Sunday Times that the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) "sits in judgment of the claims and alters the goal posts as and when it chooses". Sky News suggested that Sir Alan's final settlement could be worth between £4 million and £5 million. Confirming the settlement of his claim, DBT said: "We pay tribute to Sir Alan Bates for his long record of campaigning on behalf of victims and have now paid out over £1.2 billion to more than 9,000 victims." They added, "We can confirm that Sir Alan's claim has reached the end of the scheme process and been settled." In last year’s King’s Birthday honours, he was awarded a knighthood for his relentless campaign for justice spanning more than two decades.
