The post-match analysis following Catherine Connolly’s spectacular presidential election win will undoubtedly include debate over whether the loosely slung-together left can hold it together long enough to contest a general election in due course. It’s unlikely. Rarely troubled by time in Government taking the hard decisions, opposition parties have plenty of opportunity to hurl from the ditch, not holding back their outrage on everything from housing to health, without having to implement any of the solutions.
