Silchar fake doctor arrested for running bogus medical degree racket

Silchar: Cachar Police in Silchar have arrested a fake doctor, the alleged leader and the prime accused, for allegedly running one of the biggest fake medical degree racket in Barak Valley. The accused has been identified as Jayanta Prashad Das, known to many as “Dr JP Das." He has been alleged to have cheated people for years by pretending to be a doctor and issuing fake medical certificates to others. Das was nabbed and taken into custody by a team led by Cachar SP Numal Mahatta. His arrest is the 14th in the ongoing investigation against fake doctors across the district. Also read- Fake Gynaecologist arrested at Silchar Medical College HospitalAs per a TOI news report, the police stated that Das set up a fake institution called the National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Silchar. This institute falsely claimed to provide certificates in “alternative medicine.” Using these certificates, many unqualified people started working as doctors in Assam and other states. However, these individuals who received their degree from the institute were unaware that both the degree and the institute were fake. They trusted the institute, thinking it was a recognised medical body, but police confirmed it has no official approval from any authority.Speaking to TOI, Mahatta said, "The name of Dr. JP Das repeatedly surfaced during our recent operations. He was running a fake institute called the National Institute of Medical Sciences, which has no official recognition. We also suspect his own medical degree to be fake”.Digging deep into his educational background, the police found that Das did not study in any recognised Indian medical institution, but reportedly pursued his education in Bangladesh. Apart from the fake institute, police confirmed that he also owned a private establishment, Mawsumi Hospital and Geno Spa & Therapy Centre, located on Trunk Road in Silchar. These centres helped him build trust among people while secretly running the fake doctor scam. When confronted by reporters, Das claimed he was being unfairly linked to the Pulak Malakar case, the first fake doctor arrested in Cachar, who had been practising as a gynaecologist at a women’s welfare home.Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, "After years of running this racket, he has finally been caught. We are now tracing others who benefited from these fraudulent documents."Also read- Illegal Hospital Busted, Quack caught in raid
