The Police Fire Rescue Service is investigating the real cause of fire that burnt down parts of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission head office in Honiara early this morning.
The fire rescue service received a report of the building on fire after 6am and immediately responded.
Supervising Director of the Fire Rescue Service, James Ketaru said the fire had spread rapidly over parts of the building when they arrived at the scene.
The initial report said the fire was caused by an electric fault while investigation is continuing to find the real cause.
“The report I received said it was an electrical fault fire.
“When I assessed the scene, it seemed there would be an escalation of fire. We requested additional assistance from other firefighters,” Ketaru said.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, part of the building has been burned down.
Most of the documents and information inside could not be retrieved.
“We conducted a fire investigation, but we are still working to fully confirm the cause. However, the report I received indicated it was an electrical fire,” he said.
Meanwhile the public is advised to be cautious with electricity in their homes and offices.
Power points and any equipment should be switched off when not used.
Mr. Ketaru reminded the public to contact the fire service immediately in case of emergency.
The fire brigade must be contacted immediately on 24476 to report any fire incidents.
