SI Cannock honour women who have made a difference

They did this by unveiling two Rosie’s Plaques – made by the club during a region project to celebrate women’s achievements that have often been overlooked by those who create the traditional blue plaques that are erected across the country.

One of the plaques is for Ethel Powell, also known as the Florence Nightingale of Cannock, whose amazing achievements include helping to raise more than £1,500,000 for medical care in Cannock, working tirelessly to ensure that Cannock had a hospital and that it contained the best possible medical equipment, including a Breast Screening Unit and founding the very successful League of Friends.

Members of Ethel’s family were present to witness how much her dedication for over 40 years is appreciated.

The other plaque celebrates that there has been a Soroptimist club in the town for 70 years! The plaque recognises and commends the women who have worked and continue to work to educate enable and empower women and girls locally and around the world.

The plaques have pride of place mounted on marble pillars in front of Cannock Town Centre clock and will stand as a reminder of the work done by these amazing women. Each of the plaques have a QR code below them which contains more information about these wonderful women!

SI Cannock were delighted to be joined by Deputy Lieutenant Charles Hawley, Josh Newbury MP Cannock Chase Council Chairman Cllr Steve Thornley along with other CCDC Councillors, members of Cannock & Stafford League of Hospital Friends, the Conduit Trust, Soroptimists from other clubs within Soroptimist International of Midland Chase Region and friends and family on what was a very special occasion.
