Team India star batter Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the hospital in Sydney after undergoing treatment for a rib injury and internal bleeding that he sustained while fielding during the third ODI against Australia. The ODI vice-captain walked off the field after claiming a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey, as he had hurt himself while pulling off a dive on the field. Shreyas Iyer was immediately hospitalized, and even had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to arrest the internal bleeding caused by a laceration in the spleen. A member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) medical team was present with the player to oversee the treatment. The star batter had recently posted an update on social media, where he assured the well-wishers that he was fine and recovering well. The BCCI released a statement on Saturday, November 1, which mentioned that Iyer underwent a minor procedure in the hospital, and will remain in Sydney for the time being until he is fully fit to make the long flight back home. "Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same," the BCCI statement read. He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today. The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly," the statement continued. Ahead of the ongoing T20I series, skipper Suryakumar Yadav had also assured fans that Shreyas Iyer was recovering well, and is in touch with everyone. He had also jokingly suggested that the Indian T20I squad would travel with the injured player on the way back home. Shreyas Iyer in major doubt for the home series against South Africa Initial reports had suggested that Iyer was expected to be ruled out for three weeks, with the fear of a hairline fracture to his rib being a major contingent factor. However, the timeline has arguably stretched since then, courtesy of the internal bleeding, and an extended stay in the hospital. Team India's home ODI series is scheduled to begin on November 30, after the conclusion of the two-match Test series.
