The Constitution states that the president when entering office must make a declaration “in the presence of Almighty God”. 11.21am, 10 Nov 2025 Share options PRESIDENT-ELECT CATHERINE CONNOLLY will be inaugurated at the Áras tomorrow. Under the Constitution, the incoming president must take an oath that begins: “In the presence of Almighty God, I do solemnly and sincerely promise and declare…” and ends with, “May God direct and sustain me.” As Ireland has become more secular in recent years, the inclusion of religious language in the presidential oath has occasionally prompted discussion about its place in modern Ireland.
