The Maldives is the only country in the world enforcing a ban of this kind. 10.15am, 6 Nov 2025 Share options THE MALDIVES HAS become the first country in the world to ban smoking for younger generations. People born on or after 1 January 2007 will be prohibited from buying, selling or smoking tobacco. Vaping was already made illegal for all ages last year. Advertisement The ban “reflects the government’s strong commitment to protecting young people from the harms of tobacco,” according to the Maldives’ health department.
