One of Manchester’s most loved neighbourhood restaurants has announced the shock news that it is closing after 12 years in business, blaming rising costs and “insufficient government support”. The Laundrette in Chorlton has been rated the number one restaurant on Tripadvisor for Greater Manchester for the past five years, thanks to glowing reviews from customers. But bosses took to their social media accounts on Monday to announce the restaurant, on Beech Road in Chorlton, will be closing “within the month”. They started an emotional post by saying: “Don’t be sad it’s over; smile because it happened”. Stay connected with our City Life newsletter here It went on: “Dear friends and loyal patrons of The Laundrette Chorlton. “After 12 wonderful years, we regret to announce the closure of our beloved restaurant. “What began as a quirky spot turned into a community hub filled with laughter, friendships, and countless celebrations. “We’ve enjoyed hosting everything from intimate date nights to lively parties, proudly holding the #1 spot on TripAdvisor in Manchester for over 5 years—thanks to your support. “To our amazing customers: Your stories and smiles have meant everything to us. And to our incredible staff—past and present—you’ve turned this laundrette into a home. We couldn’t have done it without you.” Explaining the reason for the closure now, the statement continued: “Unfortunately, rising costs and insufficient government support have made it impossible to keep our doors open.” Signed off by “The Laundrette Team”, they announced they will be serving “our last slices and cocktails within the next month” and urged customers to join them for “one last hurrah”. The shock statement on Monday has already led to an outpouring of supportive comments from customers past and present. Sam Fraser wrote: “Guys you should be so incredibly proud. It’s been the regular pit stop for so many people and the memories can’t be taken away. “The best atmosphere, music, cocktails & carbs! You nailed it! I’m so sorry this crappy government have let you down. Beech Road won’t be the same without you!” James Downing wrote: “This is desperately sad news.. Had so many great times and meals here. If somewhere as good as this can’t make things work in these times, it’s looking very very bleak indeed. “The government need to step in a do something to support hospitality businesses. Wishing you and all the staff the very best.” Deanna Carney added: “What you guys have achieved with the Launderette is amazing. We have happy memories and love coming. Will try and get to you before you close.” The restaurant has a prominent corner site on Beech Road, and is always a popular spot in the summer months thanks to its terraced seating areas outside. It prided itself on its “cocktail and carbs” menus loved by customers. The owners of The Laundrette have said they are keen to hear from anyone interested in buying the site for a new business to get in touch via email.
