The show, which first aired back in 2013, sees DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and DS Lorna Tosh McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell) investigate the murder of an elderly woman. But prior to investigating the main crime of the show, the detectives were seeing to a man who had warned them of a shipment of drugs was 'coming in' with the fishing boats on the island. He was seen in the back of Calder and Tosh's car before they got out to investigate the contents of a fish room, but she seemed uneasy about being so close to the drugs he had tipped the detectives off about. So it perhaps stands to reason that when the detectives left him unattended - and proceeded to find nothing - the young man ran away. The policing error went far from unnoticed and fans took to Twitter/X to call out the blunder: 'Shetland off to a realistic start. Why didn't someone stay with him if it was that important?' But while some viewers couldn't help but point out the apparent policing blunder, others took to social media to praise the TV show's return. They wrote: 'Brilliant programme and cast/crew.'; 'Shetland being back tonight is the best thing about this sh***y time of year.'; 'Shetland is back - normal service has resumed.'; 'The BBC must have upped their budget on Shetland, the cinematography was epic on that first episode.' A picture of loneliness begins to emerge as Eadie had not spoken to her son Ed in years. 'Old friend Arthur Mair is too busy caring for his ailing wife Lana, while their house is full with daughter Isobel, her struggling husband Tom, and their heavily pregnant teenager, Jess, having recently moved in. 'Attentive local Colin Waite turns Calder and Tosh's focus to David Powell, an anxious, young neighbour with a troubled past. His overly protective mum, Gina, blocks all questions while trying to figure out what her son is hiding. 'Suspecting the residents of Lunniswick are holding back about their relationships with Eadie, Calder and Tosh begin to unravel a complicated web of lies. Worse still, there's a personal link to the case for one of the team, testing loyalty to the limits.' Shetland continues on Wednesday at 9pm on BBC1 and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
