'She's the kid we follow': Norris' Macke leads Titans to comeback win over Elkhorn

FIRTH — When Class B No. 8 Norris needed it most, it found a way.
The Titans, who once trailed Elkhorn 7-2 on Thursday, rallied behind six RBIs from Liv Macke for a 10-8 victory over the Antlers.
Macke homered in the bottom of the first inning, added a sacrifice fly in the third and singled in two runs in the fifth.
But it was RBIs five and six that helped the Titans complete the comeback and take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Norris scored six times, including a two-run double from Macke to give Norris a 9-7 lead.
“She’s the kid we follow,” Norris head coach Kyle McMurray said. “She’s our catcher. She is back there working every single day and she doesn’t take a game off. She will get beat up and banged up and she’s right back there catching the next inning — it’s her mentality and that is just who she is as a kid and she will go out and compete every opportunity she gets, whether behind the plate or at the plate.”
Reese Behrends helped tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single to tie the game 7-7. Marlee Pavelka also added a big hit to help the Titans cut into the deficit with a 2-run single earlier in the frame.
Elkhorn that started out fast out the gates, scoring three runs off Behrends and adding four more in the top of the fourth for a commanding 7-2 lead.
“There were going to be things that went our way and there were going to be things that weren’t going to go our way,” McMurray said. “Just stay the course and made a few adjustments throughout the game and found a way to win. It keeps us with some momentum, that’s what we need, to keep our momentum building. We still have a lot of things to work on, but we are keeping our momentum building as we work towards the finish line.”
Behrends pitched five innings for the Titans, allowing nine hits and seven runs while striking out one.
Embrie Bednar came in relief to pick up the victory while striking out six in two innings of work.
“Both of those pitchers — they are phenomenal,” the Norris coach said. “They each have their role and they know what their role is and go out and execute the game plan really, really well. Reese was frustrated she gave up so many runs, but she got two outs early in almost every inning and we couldn’t get that third out.
“Credit to Elkhorn for being scrappy and doing what they could. We’ve got to play a little bit better defense when she is out there. We made some plays, but we left some plays on the field when Reese was on the mound. Then Embrie comes in with a lot of juice and lets it go and when she lets it go it is tough to hit.”
