Shawn Levy Talks Directing ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Episodes

Director Shawn Levy reflected on his return to Hawkins, Indiana for one last adventure at the Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 premiere last night, revealing that he did direct two episodes later on in the season. Levy, who has executive produced the series from its inception with Dan Cohen through his 21 Laps Entertainment banner, even had with a small cameo in Season 1 Episode 4, “The Body.” “Like always, I direct two episodes every season, but because of Deadpool & Wolverine I couldn’t do 3 and 4 like I’ve done every year. So I directed 6 and I co-directed Episode 7 with the Duffer brothers,” Levy told Deadline on the red carpet. “Which is the first time that we’ve shared directing duties. It felt like a really fitting commemoration of this brotherhood the three of us have forged over the years.” Episode 6 of Season 5 is titled “Escape from Camazotz.” The director playfully joked not to ask him what Camazotz is, as many views and fans have started theorizing how that name could tie into the show. Episode 7 is titled “The Bridge.” Both will release Christmas Day in Volume 2 of Season 5. Levy also emphasized the Season 5 finale episode “deservedly” going to theaters December 31 alongside launching on Netflix New Year’s Eve. And if his words are anything to go by, its going to be an emotional watch. “I was in the pitch when we first told that story — every outline, every script — but still nothing prepared me for watching Episode 8, which I did about 2 weeks ago,” he added. “You can ask Matt and Ross. I Facetimed them from Star Wars in London weeping. I couldn’t get it together. That’s how moving this finale is. It really sticks the landing, and the brothers have just nailed it.” RELATED: ‘Stranger Things’ 5 World Premiere Photos: Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour & More Attend Levy shared that Star Wars: Starfighter is just over halfway through filming, praising Ryan Gosling for his collaboration.
