Shawn Lavin wins hotly contested Amherst supervisor election

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Shawn Lavin has declared victory in the Amherst supervisor election, a promotion from the deputy supervisor role he is currently in. As of 10:20 p.m., Lavin has secured 52.9% of the vote over business owner Dan Gagliardo, who ran on the Republican line. Lavin, who has worked under current supervisor Brian Kulpa, has run on the platform of deliberative development in neighborhoods, investing to repair the town's roads and bridges, protecting services and quality of life in the town, and reforming the town's government. The election was a hotly contested one. Much of it revolved around Erie County's purchase of the former Westwood Country Club. Gagliardo accused Lavin of acting unethically for his role in the purchase, filing an ethics complaint. Lavin said he recused himself from the Sept. 25 vote on the transfer. Lavin was first elected to the Amherst Town Board in 2017. He served in the Air National Guard and then served as the Director of Veterans Affairs and currently works as the Deputy Commissioner of Personnel. Lavin will replace current supervisor Brian Kulpa, who served two terms as supervisor. Town law prohibits him from serving a third term.
