He passed away at his home in Newton, though no cause of death has been revealed. Harvard officials and local leaders confirmed the news on Sunday, expressing deep sorrow over his sudden death. Setti Warren's Career Warren made history as Massachusetts’ first popularly elected African American mayor, serving two terms from 2010 to 2018. During his time as mayor, he focused on education, sustainability, and financial stability for the city. Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller praised him for his dedication, saying he “worked across divides” and invested deeply in schools, innovation, and long-term city planning. Before his time as mayor, Warren served as a special assistant at the White House during the Clinton administration and worked as New England director for FEMA from 2000 to 2001. In 2017, he launched a campaign for Massachusetts governor but ended it the following year, citing fundraising challenges. Harvard Mourns Loss Of A Visionary At Harvard University, Warren held key leadership roles, first as Executive Director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy, and later as Director of the Institute of Politics. Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy M Weinstein and Harvard College Dean David J Deming said he was a “visionary and tireless leader” who inspired countless students through his work and mentorship. Many political leaders paid tribute to Warren’s legacy. Congresswoman Katherine Clark called him “a beloved teacher, mentor, and leader,” while Rep.
