Seriously injured victims of Manchester synagogue terrorist attack all now out of hospital

All three men left seriously injured in the Manchester synagogue terrorist attack are now out of hospital and continuing to recover, it's been confirmed. In a welcome update, given as inquests were opened and adjourned into the deaths in the attack of Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, Greater Manchester Police said the force 'doesn't anticipate' any further loss of life arising from the atrocity. Detective Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes, giving evidence during the hearing at Manchester Coroner's Court on Wednesday, said a security guard was struck by a car driven by attacker Jihad Al-Shamie outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, north Manchester, on October 2. He added a worshipper 'completing security duties' outside the synagogue was stabbed and another worshipper inside 'sustained a gunshot injury'. The inquest heard that injury was tragically the result of armed police officers shooting Al-Shamie dead. As reported in the Manchester Evening News , provisional causes of death were given for both Mr Cravitz and Mr Daulby at the brief hearing. A post-mortem examination found Mr Daulby died from 'a single gunshot wound to the chest'. Det Chief Supt Hughes said: "Mr Daulby attended the synagogue that morning as a worshipper. During the attack, Mr Daulby was actively holding the main synagogue doors shut for approximately two minutes as the offender attempted to force entry. "At around 9.38am Mr Daulby appears to have been struck by a bullet discharged by an armed officer outside the premises. First aid was administered by police, fire and ambulance staff. His life was pronounced extinct at 10.15am." His family went on to call him a 'quiet hero' who leapt to his seat inside the synagogue to help barricade the door with others. Al-Shamie, said police, 'may have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology'. He's understood to have been granted British citizenship in 2006 as a teenager, having come to the UK as a child. Detailing what is known of the attack, Det Chief Supt Hughes said Al-Shamie went to the synagogue at 9.30am. He said: "Al-Shamie is recorded on CCTV as driving a vehicle into a security guard and the external gate and wall at the synagogue entrance and then subsequently attacking worshippers and security staff with a knife. "Armed police attended the incident and discharged several rounds at the suspected terrorist. As a result of this incident, three people have lost their lives, which includes two victims and the suspected terrorist." Det Chief Supt Hughes said armed officers 'discharged several rounds' at Al-Shamie, who he said was 'aggressively' running towards them with a knife wearing 'what clearly presented as a suicide belt'. "A single stray or possibly deflected bullet has penetrated the synagogue doors, and fatally struck Mr Daulby in the chest," he added. "First aid was provided inside and outside the synagogue, but Mr Daulby was pronounced deceased at the scene at 10.15am." A post-mortem examination found Mr Cravitz died from 'multiple stab wounds'. Mr Cravitz attended the synagogue as a worshipper on the morning, the court heard. Det Chief Supt Hughes said: "At 9.30am, a black Kia Picanto vehicle is driven at speed by Jihad Al-Shamie and collided with one of the security guards and then the gate wall of the synagogue, narrowly missing Mr Cravitz and the other security guard. "The offender exited the vehicle armed with a knife and immediately made stabbing motions towards Mr Cravitz to his upper torso and head/neck area. "Members of the public and Community Security Trust (CST) personnel arrived to assist and administer first aid, followed by armed police, fire service and paramedics who administered trauma care and CPR. Mr Cravitz was placed onto a stretcher and transported to a waiting ambulance." He was sadly pronounced dead later at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The brief hearing was presided over by, Her Honour Judge Alexia Durran, the Chief Coroner of England and Wales. Inquests into the deaths of both men were opened and adjourned. The attack - later declared an act of terrorism - happened on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. A pre-inquest review hearing will be held on February 18.
