A series of earthquakes have been recorded in the Canary Islands in recent days including a tremor measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale between the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria on Saturday evening. The tremor was “among the strongest felt in recent months”, Canarian Weekly reports , although experts have warned that it’s not a “cause for concern”. Saturday’s quake was recorded at 8.17pm local time by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) at a depth of 29km beneath the sea. It was felt in municipalities such as La Orotava, La Laguna, and Los Realejos. It’s part of an “ongoing seismic swarm” which has been detected since Thursday off the coast of Fasnia in south-eastern Tenerife. The IGN confirmed that these quakes are part of a volcanotectonic series, earthquakes caused by the fracturing of rock, rather than long-period events linked to the movement of underground fluids such as magma. Itahiza Domínguez, Director of the IGN in the Canary Islands, said: “It’s not a cause for concern. This event does not indicate a magmatic intrusion beneath Tenerife, but we will continue to monitor how it develops.” Seismic and volcanic activity is monitored by the IGN in the Canary Islands and Spain’s other active volcanic regions. In September Tenerife held its “biggest volcanic emergency simulation” as an emergency drill was performed. As part of the drill a test alert message was sent, simulating a “red alert” volcanic eruption scenario, along with evacuation exercises. According to projects by Canary Islands Volcanology Institute, there is a 40 per cent probability of an eruption in Tenerife within the next 50 years, rising to 63 per cent over the next 100 years.
